...he was a good friend of one of my friends, the author/poet Richard Brautigan... they used to go fishing together... never met him though...

He was in a lot of great stuff. I think my first encounter with him was The Man Who Fell to Earth (David Bowie). That was at least 20 years after the movie was made. I just saw him in an episode of Columbo a few weeks back.
